Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS)
Founded in 1958, CIPS is Canada's association of Information Technology (IT) professionals. CIPS represents IT professionals on issues affecting the industry and profession.
CIPS is also involved in a number of initiatives related to public policy, setting standards within the IT profession and assisting its community. Three of the main programs are the certification of IT professionals (Information Systems Professional - I.S.P. designation); the accreditation of computer science, software engineering, and MIS programs in Canadian colleges and universities; and the organization of a Women in IT program to educate high school girls about career opportunities in IT. The Wireless Communications Alliance (WCA), founded in 1993, is a Silicon Valley-based non-profit business league of 2000 individuals and 350+ companies and organizations dealing in wireless technology and markets. The goals of the WCA are to promote education, networking and exchange of non-proprietary information; increase awareness of Northern California's vast wireless capabilities; and assist a broad spectrum of companies, including start-ups. The WCA organizes monthly meetings with presentations on a wide spectrum of topics including the technical and marketing aspects of wireless products and services, regulatory issues, wireless standards and investor-driven wireless market analysis. The Silicon Valley Chinese Wireless Technology Association (SVCWireless) was established on August 1, 2000 by a group of wireless technology professionals and enthusiasts who share a common interest in the emerging China wireless market.
SVCWireless is an open association that embraces everyone interested in learning and sharing knowledge on wireless technologies and business activities. Not just technology focused, SVCWireless also promotes entrepreneurship, networking and learning, with a focus on building a bridge between the wireless industries in Asia and the United States.
In less than three years, the membership has extended beyond 3,000 members consisting of wireless technologists, senior Telecom executives, venture capitalists, investment bankers, lawyers, and other business professionals. The Wired Woman Society (WWS) is a non-profit technology association for professionals who want to know more about current technologies and career opportunities in Canada's technology sector. The Toronto Chapter of the Wired Woman Society conducts low cost bi-monthly seminars which provide a forum for women to hear from guest speakers who provide cutting-edge technology information, discuss relevant career issues and share their experiences about working in Canada's technology sector. The Canadian Linux Users' Exchange (CLUE) promotes the use of Linux in Canada by fostering communications and cooperation between users, developers, the media, the general public, and the private and public sectors. Our goal is to increase the use and appreciation of Linux in Canada by enhancing association and communication amongst its developers, users, suppliers and the general public.
CLUE will serve the Canadian computer industry and its users as follows:
1. CLUE promotes cooperation amongst Linux users and the various Linux User Groups across Canada by activities including, but not limited to, sponsoring several Linux-in-Canada mailing lists.
2. CLUE works with local Linux User Groups to coordinate national and international events promoting the advocacy of Linux such as installation festivals, seminars and trade shows. CLUE will also act as an advocate for Canadian Linux users within the international community.
3. CLUE provides media liaison between the Linux community and the Canadian media, both making the media aware of Linux and monitoring Linux's media coverage.
4. CLUE acts as an advocate on behalf of Linux and the interests of Linux users in Canada within both the private and public sectors.
